Voulez-Vous | 7 May 2007
I really can't tell whether I like the Voulez-Vous album or not. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't.
There's a couple of fantastic songs on the album like Voulez-Vous and the extremely underrated As Good As New. But there's also a couple of tracks that are far worse. Examples are The King Has Lost His Crown and Kisses Of Fire. And Voulez-Vous gave us two of ABBA's lousiest singles: Chiquitita and I Have A Dream.
In particular the latter is one of those ABBA songs that make me want to vomit. It's one of the ultimate soft ABBA songs, which is a side of ABBA that is not attractive at all. I'd rather have songs like So Long or Hole In Your Soul.
In fact only a cuple of months I want t listen to Voulez-Vous and that's from May to July. Maybe because that's when the album was released. Anyway I think the Voulez-Vous songs belong to that season.
The funny thing is that Voulez-Vous is one of those cheer-up ABBA albums. It makes you want to smile, if you know what I mean. Much more than the gloomy The Visitors or the heavily orchestrated The Album. And still I prefer the far superior The Album.
In my opinion Voulez-Vous is unbalanced. It's so very much a compilation of songs instead of an album. One songs is based on disco, the other is a ballad, the other classic melodic. A mixture of styles that makes it hard to get used to. And maybe that is exactly why I am so mysteriously attracted to Voulez-Vous. Especially in this time of year.
