The ABBA clothes | 29 May 2006
In the last couple of years the members of the international press ridicule ABBA's stage clothes all the time. And not only the media do that. For some reason even the ABBA members themselves seem to be somewhat ashamed of their outfits. Numerous times the four ABBA members, and in particular Björn, have made so called funny remarks about their clothes. And I think these comments are very unfair. The ABBA fashion is connected to the ABBA era. Which is the seventies and early eighties. So you have to look at the perspective of that times when looking at the costumes. And on top of that; the costumes weren't half as bad as people tend to think. I was lucky enough to actually see some of the original clothes back in April. The designer of the costumes, Owe Sandström, was the guest of honour at the annual ABBA convention in The Netherlands. And he brought with him sparkling pieces of his stage clothes. As can be seen (see page Galleries / ABBA costumes) most of the outfits are really beautiful. Even the biggest nerd has to admit that in fact there was nothing wrong with the costumes. Except maybe for the red and purple Voulez-Vous pieces. Oh well, every designer has had bad a couple of days …. Especially the 1979 costumes are very well made. Look at all the rich details on the big photograph and admit it: this is pure genius and craftsmanship. But best of all are the 1977 tour clothes. It's a phenomenal "Pimp My Simple Dress" design with its beautiful golden parts. And on top of that last week Madonna showed her new tour outfit during her first of many concerts. It was an outift that had a striking resemblance with ABBA's 1979 tour clothes. Which proves that ABBA was way ahead of its time. Even with their clothes. Or am I going too far now? |
