Happy new year | 31 December 2003
I have always had mixed feelings about this track from Super Trouper. Somehow it just does not fit in with the other songs on that album. It would have made much more sense if they would not have released the song on the album, but released it as a single only. Maybe because the Super Trouper single was still in the charts or maybe the ABBA members or the record company did not like the song, but it never was a true single. Although a video clip had been made, why oh why did they never release the track on 7"? I am sure that it would have been a massive hit. Do I like the song? Not too much really. But that is not the song's fault. The song is not bad at all. A great tune, a superb arrangement and wonderful vocals make it a classic. The reason why I start to dislike the song is because of the media. And national Dutch TV in particular. Every year when the clock strikes 12, and fireworks mark a start of a new year, they play the song. And that is so wrong. Seems they never really listen to the actual lyrics. The song fits perfectly in the afternoon of January 1st, but not in the middle of the night. So tonight I will definitely switch off the TV right after the beginning of 2004. I'll go outside, and enjoy the festivities there. I want to wish all the visitors of ABBA Plaza a great 2004 and a Happy New Year. With or without the actual song :) |
